Smashing ice cream van dessert to return to Ellon

A homeware and garden centre in Ellon is launching a unique local dessert as part of a café renovation and investment programme.

JRD Equipment, which is based in Brommiesburn Road, supplies  DIY equipment, gardening tools and garden machinery, as well as household equipment and toys. The company has begun a significant investment programme, beginning with the renovation of its café.

As part of the new upgrade, JRD will launch the Ellon Smasher, a lavish ice cream dessert, prepared by in-house baker Moira Hunter. Mrs Hunter and her late husband, Graham, ran a popular ice cream van business in the town for 27 years, selling home-made tablet and tray bakes along with the popular unique ice-cream. 

The dessert will add to the café’s growing selection of meals and snacks, and home-bakes including tablet, Viennese whirls and custard creams prepared by Mrs Hunter in the kitchens at JRD.

Hendry Brown, JRD Equipment manager, said: “The café renovation marks the beginning of a programme of investment in JRD.. We are excited about the changes ahead, which will modernise the store, whilst maintaining our reputation for a wide and reliable product range.

“To signal the start of the renovations, we are proud to be introducing the Ellon Smasher, as it is unique to the area and will no doubt be a very popular addition to the wide range of products available at JRD.  We are delighted to have Moira on our team, as she is a familiar face in the town, and her home-bakes are extremely popular.
